Project Purpose
This project is a cultural exchange initiative to deliver Japanese picture books, translated into Ukrainian, to children affected by the war in Ukraine. “One book can connect hearts and unite cultures.” Through this simple yet meaningful gesture, the project aims to bring hope, dreams, and peace to children living under difficult conditions.
About the Project
The Picture Book Donation Project to Ukraine shares Japanese picture books — translated into Ukrainian — with children in Ukraine. This initiative is part of a long-standing effort that, since 1950, has delivered books to children in 20 countries over 75 years. Ukraine is the 20th country to receive this gift — a symbolic and heartfelt gesture of friendship and support.
Three and a half years have passed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, and the path to peace remains uncertain. Amid this ongoing crisis, the Picture Book Donation Project to Ukraine was launched as a cultural initiative to bring hope, comfort, and learning to Ukrainian children through Japanese picture books translated into Ukrainian.
As part of broader cultural diplomacy efforts between Japan and Ukraine, this project has gained support from key partners and institutions committed to building long-lasting connections between the two countries.
Now, in Kyoto — a sister city of Kyiv — the project will be formally introduced during a special public lecture focused on strengthening cultural bridges between Japan and Ukraine. We are honored that Dr. Sergiy Korsunsky, former Ambassador of Ukraine to Japan and an early supporter of the initiative, will share insights on cultural exchange and reflect on the ties between the two nations and cities.
This event is proudly organized in collaboration with the Kyoto City International Foundation (KOKOKA).
