Air Force Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The first Sunday of August is the principal military holiday of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It honors all those who defend Ukraine's skies: military aviation, surface-to-air missile forces, radio engineering troops, electronic warfare units, and the personnel who ensure the operation of aircraft, radar systems, and air defense complexes. Deep gratitude is extended to every service member who protects Ukraine both in the air and on the ground. Every intercepted aerial target is the result of their coordinated efforts and extraordinary dedication.

The history of Ukrainian military aviation dates back to the early twentieth century. The first national aviation units were established between 1917 and 1920 to defend the Ukrainian People's Republic. A new chapter began in 1992, following the restoration of Ukraine's independence. In 2004, the integration of military aviation and air defense forces created the modern unified structure responsible for protecting the country's airspace.

Since 2014, the Air Force has been carrying out combat missions, while Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 brought unprecedented challenges. During this period, Ukraine developed and successfully combat-tested its first domestically produced ballistic missile. Together with its European partners within the anti-ballistic coalition, Ukraine is also developing new air defense systems based on the Ukrainian Freya missile project and the country's practical experience in intercepting both hypersonic and ballistic targets.

Ukraine has also established itself as one of the world's leading centers for unmanned aerial technologies. Advanced interceptor drones such as Sting, Shadow, and the cutting-edge Terra A1 have significantly transformed modern aerial warfare. Terra A1 is a unique joint project between the Ukrainian startup Amazing Drones and the Japanese corporation Terra Drone, announced in March 2026. The drone can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h, enabling it to effectively intercept reconnaissance drones as well as high-speed attack UAVs such as Shahed drones. This high-tech cooperation and Japan's investment demonstrate strategic confidence in Ukrainian engineering expertise while opening new opportunities for the development of advanced security systems.

Cooperation with international partners strengthens the capabilities of Ukraine's armed forces. At the same time, it is the courage, professionalism, and resilience of the men and women serving in the Air Force every day that remain the foundation of Ukraine's defense and the protection of its skies during this difficult war.
