On August 8, Ukraine marks the Day of the Communications and Cybersecurity Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The history of Ukrainian military communications dates back to 1920, when the training of the first specialized personnel began in Kyiv. On January 1, 2022, these units officially became a separate branch of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Modern military science defines cyberspace as a distinct fifth domain of warfare, alongside land, sea, air, and space. A unified command system makes it possible to build a comprehensive digital defense system for the country.
Protecting the information space is essential to preserving Ukraine’s national identity and cultural heritage. During the war that has continued since 2014, and especially since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, the demands placed on the Communications Forces have increased many times over.
They serve as the digital shield of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, standing guard around the clock, ensuring uninterrupted command and control, and preventing the enemy from penetrating strategic networks.
Ukraine’s defense relies on advanced technologies. The Armed Forces actively use the national DELTA situational awareness system, which gathers data from UAVs, satellites, and sensors and displays a real-time map of the battlefield.
To maintain resilient communications, the military uses cryptographically protected satellite communications, software-defined radios (SDRs) with automatic frequency hopping to counter electronic warfare systems, and Security Operations Centers (SOCs) to monitor cyber threats.
The Communications and Cybersecurity Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine combine the historical experience of the Ukrainian military with the engineering achievements of the twenty-first century. Their daily work ensures reliable coordination between units, protects the lives of Ukraine’s defenders, and strengthens the country’s resilience.
