Border Guard Day
29/04/26, 03:00
On April 30, Ukraine honors its border guards — professionals who form the first line of defense for the country’s territorial integrity and state sovereignty.

This date has a strong historical foundation: in April 1918, Ukrainian forces established national symbols along the eastern frontiers, marking the birth of the borders of the Ukrainian republic.
The modern history of the struggle for these borders began in 2014, and since February 24, 2022, when russia launched its full-scale invasion, every meter of Ukrainian land has become a place of heroic resistance. Border guard units were among the first to face the enemy’s attacks, which came simultaneously from the territories of Russia, Belarus, and from the temporarily occupied Crimea.
Ukraine shares land borders with seven countries: Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, belarus, and russia. Today, every section of this border is sacred, as nearly every Ukrainian has relatives or acquaintances who are currently on the front lines or directly guarding the state borders.
In this twelve-year war, Ukraine continues to defend its right to exist and its territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. Any conditions involving the renunciation of its own lands are seen as a betrayal of those who stopped enemy колонnes in the first moments of the invasion and who continue to hold the line today.
An integral part of border guard service is working dogs, which assist soldiers daily in carrying out complex tasks. Among the ranks are various breeds: German and Belgian Shepherds (Malinois) are indispensable for detaining intruders, while Labradors, Spaniels, and Fox Terriers demonstrate exceptional abilities in detecting dangerous substances and explosives.
The dedication of these animals is officially recognized at the state level. There is a special award — the “For Faithful Service” medal — granted to dogs for saving soldiers’ lives, detecting mine traps, and providing effective assistance in combat conditions. This recognition reflects deep respect for their loyalty and service.
Today, border guards stand not only for Ukraine’s territory but also for the security of the entire European continent. Their service demands constant vigilance, high technological competence, and unwavering dedication to their oath.
Every repelled attack and every detected enemy drone is a contribution to the shared mission of preserving sovereignty. The memory of fallen heroes is forever etched in the heart of a nation that values its land above all.
Honoring today’s heroes and preserving these traditions strengthens the bond between generations of Ukrainians in their pursuit of living freely on their own land. Gratitude for this service unites the nation around the idea of the inviolability of its borders.
