Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

06/12/25, 03:00

On December 6, Ukraine marks the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This date was established in the first year of Ukraine’s independence, in 1991, when the parliament adopted the law on creating a national army. Since then, it has symbolized the state’s defense tradition and the responsibility to protect the country.

The full-scale war has given this day a new meaning. Ukrainians have witnessed the strength of the Armed Forces in everyday events: the defense of cities, the liberation of territories, the return of flags over Ukrainian communities, the rescue of civilians, and extraordinary resilience under the most difficult circumstances. Through these stories, society has formed deep respect for its defenders.

For the military, December 6 is a day of honour and professional dignity. On the front line, in battle, they carry the path toward peace — toward the return of their native places, toward a future where children once again grow up under quiet stars. It is a day when the nation says “thank you” to those who hold the line, who stand at their positions in heat and cold, who defend the possibility of living freely. In formation, in units, in headquarters — every soldier remains faithful to their duty and to their comrades.

For those in the rear, it is a day of gratitude. Volunteers, doctors, teachers, craftsmen, drivers — everyone contributes their part to our shared victory. The rear lives with care for those at the front and with faith that all who stand on the line will return. This unity has become a shield that strengthens the army just as armour protects a soldier.

The Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is a celebration of a living legend — the legend of a people who build their defense together. Today, we bow to those who stand for the country’s freedom and to those who support them from behind the lines. This is a path we walk together. With faith. With gratitude. With Ukraine in our hearts.
