Day of the National Flag of Ukraine

The Day of the National Flag of Ukraine is a special holiday that unites the traditions of the past with the Ukrainian people’s present-day struggle for independence. The blue and yellow flag symbolizes a clear sky above golden fields. During russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in 2022, and the war that has continued since 2014, these colours have acquired a profound meaning of resilience, freedom, and an unbreakable spirit.

Alongside the national flag, the flags of Ukrainian cities also play an important role in Ukrainian heraldry, reflecting the distinct identity of each region. The tradition of municipal symbols has a centuries-old history rooted in the 14th–17th centuries. During the period of Magdeburg rights, Ukrainian cities received their own coats of arms and banners, symbolizing local self-government and commercial strength.

Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has a flag depicting Archangel Michael with a flaming sword against a blue background. This image, known since the 16th century, represents the city’s ancient protector.
