Day of Ukrainian statehood and the baptism of the Kyivan state

On July 15, Ukraine marks the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, which is symbolically linked to the Day of the Baptism of the Kyivan state. This date was established in 2023 following Ukraine's transition to the Revised Julian calendar. The holiday honors the memory of Prince Volodymyr the Great, who adopted Christianity as the state religion in 988.
The adoption of Christianity in the 10th century shaped the geopolitical direction of the Kyivan state. Through the patronage of the Byzantine Empire and close ties with Constantinople, the Kyivan state gained high international standing and recognition among European monarchies. The state became integrated into the financial and trade systems of the medieval world. Christianization opened the way for favorable economic agreements, increased trade, and the development of architecture and crafts. The minting of its own coins bearing Christian symbols strengthened the country's financial system. At the same time, legal and cultural life flourished: literacy spread, and the first collections of laws based on Byzantine legal traditions were introduced.
The history of Ukrainian statehood spans more than a thousand years. It developed from the Kyivan state through the Galician-Volhynian Principality, the Cossack era, the Ukrainian struggle for independence in the early 20th century, and culminated in the restoration of independence in 1991. Each historical period reinforced the nation's aspiration for self-determination and independent development.
An understanding of these historical roots remains a foundation of the resilience of Ukrainian society during today's challenges. The war that began in 2014 and russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 have strengthened the determination to defend the country's sovereignty. Historical experience continues to inspire courage, solidarity, and mutual support among Ukrainians. Honoring the origins of Ukrainian statehood strengthens national unity and reaffirms Ukraine's place within European civilization, where the values of freedom and the rule of law remain fundamental.
