Artists from across Europe, cultural representatives, and honored guests gathered in a warm and inspiring atmosphere to celebrate the beginning of this month-long festival of European photography.

Ukraine House Japan was delighted to be invited to this event. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet the artists, curators, and all those who have worked passionately to make this project possible.
The initiative beautifully connects Europe and Japan through the lens of contemporary photography, creating a dialogue between cultures that are geographically distant yet deeply united by creativity and human stories.

Particularly inspiring is the strong presence of young artists, whose photographs bring a fresh and emotional perception of reality — one that deserves to be seen and shared. Their perspective opens space for empathy, reflection, and new connections across cultures.

Among them, Sasha Velichko, born in Belarus and now living in Poland as a political emigrant, received first place for her photo essay State of Denial. Her work can be viewed this week at Europe House, and it powerfully portrays the fragile balance between truth, resistance, and the search for freedom.

This year’s SEEEU festival presents photo essays and installations not only in galleries but also across various locations throughout Tokyo — from cafés and public spaces to unexpected urban environments — making art more approachable and part of daily life.
