In times of great hardship, true friends reveal themselves. Once again, Japan has demonstrated its unwavering solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

On July 1, 2026, Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Sybiha, paid an official visit to Tokyo. The visit focused on expanding bilateral cooperation and planning for Ukraine's post-war reconstruction. The central event of the visit was the meeting between the foreign ministers of Ukraine and Japan. During their talks, the ministers discussed key areas of support and signed new important agreements to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.

Ukraine deeply values Tokyo's significant contribution to our country's stability. Since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Japan's total financial, technical, and humanitarian assistance has exceeded $20 billion. This remarkable support has helped save lives, sustain Ukraine's economy, and restore critical infrastructure damaged by the war.

During the July meeting, the ministers announced two new important initiatives. Japan allocated a $500,000 grant under the JDS Scholarship Program. These funds will support the education and professional training of Ukrainian civil servants. Future leaders will study Japan's best practices in public administration to help ensure the effective reconstruction of Ukraine.

The Government of Japan also officially confirmed its readiness to finance the restoration of the Dormition Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra through UNESCO funds. The cathedral was damaged during an attack on June 15, 2026. It is also important to note that Switzerland and Greece have joined this important effort to restore the historic sanctuary. The combined support of these international partners will help preserve this unique part of the world's cultural heritage.

The Ukrainian people express their deepest gratitude to the Government of Japan and to every Japanese citizen for your continued care and support. Your assistance is far more than financial aid. It helps preserve our culture and represents a meaningful investment in the future generations of Ukrainians.

Japan continues to set an inspiring example of genuine humanity and moral leadership for the world. Our friendship grows stronger with each passing day. Thank you for your steadfast support and for your generous, compassionate hearts.
