Forgiveness Sunday
22/02/26, 03:00
Forgiveness Sunday holds a special place in the spiritual life of Ukraine.

In 2026, it falls on February 22. Forgiveness Sunday marks the end of Cheesefare Week (Masnytsia Week — the week when dairy, including cheese, is still permitted before the beginning of Lent) and forms an important boundary between the season of winter celebrations and the forty-day Great Lent that leads to Easter.
The historical roots of this observance reach back to the early centuries of Christianity. Before the beginning of Lent, monks would withdraw into the desert for an extended period of solitude. As the conditions there were harsh and uncertain, they asked one another for forgiveness for any past offenses, aware of the fragility of life and the value of sincere reconciliation.
In Ukrainian culture, this custom has been preserved and has gained deep family meaning, becoming a day of unity and mutual support. The tradition encourages people to sincerely ask relatives, friends, and neighbors for forgiveness for both intentional and unintentional wrongs. To the words “Forgive me,” it is customary to respond, “God forgives, and I forgive.” This reply reflects humility and acknowledges that mercy stands above personal grievances. In the evening, churches hold a special rite of forgiveness, during which clergy and parishioners bow to one another in mutual reconciliation.
Today, as Ukraine resists Russia’s full-scale invasion that began in 2022 and continues defending its sovereignty in the war that has persisted since 2014, Forgiveness Sunday carries renewed and profound meaning. In times of great trial, this day helps communities clear their inner space of disputes that inevitably arise under constant strain and shared sorrow. The ability to seek reconciliation strengthens national unity and resilience of spirit. Forgiveness is seen as a manifestation of great inner strength — a conscious choice to release the heavy burden of resentment in order to preserve humanity and continue the common struggle for the future. It is a moment when each person feels the support of another, finding strength in shared values.
An important part of the day is a shared family meal, where varenyky with cheese and other dairy dishes are traditionally served. It is also customary at this time to honor the memory of defenders and loved ones who have passed away, for the spiritual bond with them continues to unite us across the years.
Forgiveness Sunday is a time when sincere words lighten the soul, giving strength to preserve love for one’s native land and faith in victory.
