On May 23, Ukraine commemorates Heroes’ Day — a significant occasion dedicated to the courage, devotion, and resilience of those who fought for the country’s freedom.
This day is an important part of Ukraine’s historical memory, uniting the past and the present through deep respect for the defenders of the homeland.
The history of the observance dates back to the first half of the twentieth century. May became a symbolic month of remembrance because of tragic events connected to this period: in May 1938, the first leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Yevhen Konovalets, was assassinated, while prominent figures Mykola Mikhnovskyi and Symon Petliura had also died in previous years during the same season. In 1941, the tradition of honoring fighters for an independent Ukrainian state was officially established. During the Soviet period, the date remained a symbol of underground resistance, and after Ukraine restored its independence in 1991, it gained nationwide significance.
According to the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, this day commemorates heroes of all eras: the warriors of the Kyiv State, the Cossacks, the Sich Riflemen, soldiers of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, resistance fighters, and members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
Today, Heroes’ Day reflects the unbroken connection between generations that defended Ukrainian land throughout different periods of history. The meaning of this day has become especially profound since 2014, when Ukraine began resisting military aggression that escalated into Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
A special place in today’s remembrance belongs to modern defenders — servicemen and servicewomen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, law enforcement officers, volunteers, and medics who continue to defend the country on the front line. Ukrainian society demonstrates remarkable resilience, solidarity, and determination in protecting fundamental human values: freedom, dignity, and the right to self-determination.
The traditions of this commemorative day are aimed at fostering patriotism and preserving national identity. Across cities and villages, educational events, flower-laying ceremonies, and moments of silence bring people together in shared gratitude.
Particular attention is given to supporting the families of those who sacrificed their lives for the future of the country. This day encourages deep reflection on the price of freedom and the importance of international solidarity during times of hardship.
