Last Bell

22/05/26, 03:00

In the Ukrainian educational calendar, May holds special significance, as schools across the country traditionally celebrate the Last Bell at the end of May.

This day symbolizes the completion of the academic year, the beginning of summer holidays for students, and at the same time marks a moment of transition into adulthood for graduates who are leaving their school years behind forever.

The history of Ukrainian education is deeply rooted in traditions that were shaped over centuries. From the brotherhood schools of the 16th and 17th centuries to the renowned Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, education in Ukraine has always been founded on respect for knowledge, spirituality, and national identity. The modern celebration continues this long-standing reverence for learning and enlightenment.

Students wear vyshyvankas — traditional Ukrainian embroidered garments that symbolize the connection between generations. One of the most cherished traditions is the farewell school waltz performed by graduates in school courtyards. Particularly moving is the moment when a graduating student carefully carries a young first-grade girl on his shoulders around the school yard. In her hands, a large ceremonial bell decorated with blue-and-yellow ribbons rings solemnly, symbolically passing the continuity of knowledge from the older generation to the younger one.

Since 2014, when military aggression against Ukraine began, and especially after the start of russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, this celebration has gained a new and deeply emotional meaning. Today, ceremonies often begin with a moment of silence in memory of those who gave their lives for the freedom of the country, including brave soldiers who themselves were graduates only a few years ago.

Today, every school bell heard across Ukrainian cities and villages has become a symbol of resilience and the continuation of life. Many children experience this day through distance learning or while studying in shelters. Despite destruction and hardship, Ukrainian teachers continue to fulfill their mission, holding the educational front.

The Last Bell remains a celebration of hope, faith in victory, and belief in a bright future, where the younger generation lays the foundation for the recovery and flourishing of their country.
