March 20 EARTH DAY and the Vernal Equinox
20/03/26, 03:00
In global tradition, this day is marked by a special rhythm of nature, when the duration of light and darkness reaches perfect balance.

The vernal equinox has long been perceived by humanity as a moment of renewal, symbolizing the awakening of life and the beginning of a new astronomical year. It is on March 20, at the initiative of the United Nations, that Earth Day is observed worldwide. This occasion underscores our shared responsibility to preserve the planet, the one home for all peoples.
Ukrainian culture is deeply rooted in a reverent attitude toward the land, shaped over many centuries. The traditions of our ancestors have always been closely connected to the cycles of the sun. The period of the vernal equinox in Ukraine was seen as a time of blessing for the fields. For Ukrainians, the land has always been a sacred value — a living entity to be protected and nurtured. This respect for native soil forms the foundation of our identity, passed down from generation to generation.
Today, in 2026, the meaning of Earth Day for Ukraine carries a profound and deeply personal significance. Since 2014, and especially following the full-scale invasion of February 24, 2022, our environment has endured unprecedented trials. Ukrainian steppes, forests, and fertile black soils are now facing an ecological crisis caused by the realities of war. Large-scale landmining, the destruction of ecosystems, and the contamination of territories have become painful scars upon our natural landscape. Every tree preserved under these conditions, and every piece of land restored, becomes a symbol of our resilience and our striving for harmony.
In Japanese culture, the day of the vernal equinox is observed as an official national holiday dedicated to honoring nature and all living things. This tradition reflects a profound understanding of the value of existence and a deep respect for the fleeting beauty of each season. For Ukraine today, this day is a call for unity in the name of renewal. Responsibility for the planet begins with the protection of one’s own home. Even in times of hardship, we retain the ability to see the beauty of the first spring flowers breaking through the ashes, bearing witness to the triumph of life. Our aspiration for peace and ecological security is a contribution to the future of the global community.
Caring for the environment today is an act of the highest humanism. Every action aimed at preserving clean water or restoring forests helps to heal the wounds inflicted by war. The spring sun, shining equally across all continents, calls us to solidarity and to an awareness of the fragility of our shared world. By nurturing our native land, we preserve the very foundation of existence for future generations, affirming the values of light, justice, and the continuity of life.
