March 3 World Writer’s Day

03/03/26, 03:00

The world marks World Writer’s Day — a celebration honoring masters of the written word, whose work becomes both a mirror of their era and the voice of entire nations.

For Ukraine, this day carries particular meaning, for amid the full-scale invasion that has continued since 2022, and the war that began in 2014, literature has become a true fortress of our identity.

Ukrainians observe this day through educational initiatives, literary readings held in shelters, and presentations of new works born directly on the front lines or in the rear. Libraries and bookstores organize meetings with authors to discuss the role of the artist in times of historic trial. It is a moment of profound gratitude to those who document contemporary events, preserving memory for future generations. In such times, the native language is perceived as a living energy that unites people across space and time.

In Ukrainian tradition, the power of the word has always been equal to the power of the spirit. As the distinguished poet Lina Kostenko aptly observed: “Nations do not die from a heart attack. First, their language is taken away.” These words underscore that language is the foundation of statehood and the basis of inner freedom. Panas Myrnyi also emphasized the importance of this treasure, noting that “the greatest and most precious good of every people is its language.” For this reason, studying the works of Ukrainian classical and contemporary writers allows for a deeper understanding of the richness of our culture.

Throughout this year, we will devote considerable attention to introducing Ukrainian writers. Each story will reveal new dimensions of their talent, demonstrating how love for the native land and an unbreakable will are conveyed through their texts. Modern research into Ukrainian literature of the twentieth century and earlier periods introduces us to authors whose ideas remain relevant today, helping us find answers to the complex questions of our time.

The work of a writer is an act of creating light in the darkest of times. The written word has the power to sustain, inspire, and give hope. Encountering a Ukrainian book becomes a path toward understanding the soul of a nation that values freedom and truth above all. Every page written in the Ukrainian language is a contribution to the great shared task of preserving our cultural heritage and ensuring its development in the future.
