Lecture by NPO Ukraine House Japan at Arinomachi no Kai

On November 9, 2025, NPO Ukraine House Japan was honoured to deliver a lecture at the Arinomachi no Kai (蟻の町の会 / Ant Village Association), held at Higashi Ueno Kuminkan in Tokyo, in cooperation with the Higashi Ueno Cooperative Association.
The invitation was extended by Mr. Hiroyuki Kitabatake, who grew up in the Arinomachi community, saw the ruins of postwar Ueno, and has long served as the respected leader of this thoughtful group. His message was profound:
“To truly support Ukraine, it is essential to understand its culture and history.”
Among this community are some respectful-age members — wise, gentle, and compassionate people who continue to think of others while cherishing each day of life. Their sincerity and depth of feeling touched everyone present.
Representing Ukraine House Japan, Ms. Olena Svidran, Educational Department Manager, prepared and presented two 45-minute lectures — “Ukrainian History” and “Ukrainian Culture.” Although we initially wondered whether the length might be too long for such new material, the audience engaged deeply and listened attentively. The session concluded with a lively 30-minute Q&A that fostered meaningful dialogue and heartfelt exchange — a true realization of UHJ’s mission to create spaces of connection through culture.
Educational materials originally developed by Ukrainian students at Akita University three years ago were also used during the lecture, once again receiving thoughtful and encouraging feedback.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Mr. Kitabatake and the Arinomachi community for this meaningful opportunity to share Ukrainian culture and deepen mutual understanding between our peoples.
