From Gratitude to Global Connection: Ukraine’s Culture Shines at Expo 2025

August 5th, Ukraine’s National Day at Expo 2025 in Osaka, was dedicated to one word: gratitude—gratitude to Japan and the international community for their unwavering support, and to every person who stands today on the side of the Ukrainian nation.
Representatives of Ukraine House Japan were present on this symbolic day, joining a series of meaningful events, panel discussions, and cultural programs. It was a day rich in dialogue—on cultural, economic, and political topics—and filled with new connections and shared visions for future collaboration.
A key moment of the day was the presentation of
“Ukraine’s Unbreakable Classrooms: A Story of Educational Resilience amid War”, showcased at the Czech National Pavilion. This compelling installation told the story of Ukrainian children, teachers, and communities who continue to pursue education despite the destruction of schools and the constant threat of violence. It stood as a moving reminder that even in the darkest times, learning continues—and education itself becomes a form of resistance.
Later, the Belgian Pavilion (BelExpo) hosted a special program titled “Women (Artists) at War.” Lit in blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag, the pavilion created a space of solidarity and support. Ukrainian women artists were invited to share their contemporary works and speak about the role of creativity in wartime. The program featured immersive installations and a heartfelt panel discussion on how women continue to express, nurture, and resist through art.
Among the speakers was Hanna Vasyk—combat veteran, Sergeant of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and PhD in Anthropology and Philosophy of Culture—who took part in the panel representing Ukraine and the voices of women artists during wartime. With grace and quiet strength, she appeared not alone, but with her baby daughter in her arms—a living symbol of resilience, love, and the future Ukraine is fighting for. Her presence reminded everyone that even in times of war, life continues, and the role of women—as defenders, thinkers, artists, and mothers—is irreplaceable.

Also present was Nika Selega, CEO of the Ukrainian creative agency Bickerstaff.734, which designed Ukraine’s official pavilion, “Not For Sale.” In her remarks, Nika spoke about the role of design in national storytelling:
“At Expo—where countries show who they are—we chose not to explain our pain, but to express it through values. The Ukrainian pavilion doesn’t shout, it listens. It reveals the war through what we defend: freedom, dignity, care, and community.”

We were also glad to engage with Yuliya Tymoshenko, Editor-in-Chief of the English edition of “De-occupied: Stories of Ukrainian Resistance”, a Ukrainer publication based on testimonies from liberated regions. Her presence reflected the importance of continued cultural dialogue and collaboration between Ukraine and Japan.

The day was beautifully enriched by a stunning live performance by ONUKA, whose blend of electronic and traditional Ukrainian sounds captivated the international audience. Ukrainian band KAZKA also appeared during the festivities, delivering emotional and high-energy songs that proudly carried the voice of modern Ukraine onto the global stage.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to ZenMarket, a Japanese company that generously supported our presence at Expo 2025 by providing professional photography coverage. Their contribution helped capture and preserve the spirit of this important day.
