Ukraine’s Dignity and Freedom Day
21/11/25, 03:00
Ukraine’s Dignity and Freedom Day, observed on November 21, is a day that reflects our will to defend freedom and our enduring sense of pride.

Throughout our long history, Ukrainians have built a society grounded in freedom. From the autonomous traditions of the Cossacks to the state-building efforts of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the resistance against oppression in various eras, a culture that values honor and the right to choose our own future has taken shape. Our national anthem, too, carries a deep yearning for freedom that has been passed down through generations.
The Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity in 2013 marked turning points in modern Ukraine. People took to the streets seeking fairness, accountable governance, and respect for citizens, demonstrating the unifying power of solidarity. The value of dignity became a driving force for our society, strengthening the determination to shape a better future.
In Japan’s own history—including the transformative period of the Meiji Restoration—there were moments when society chose a new path built on responsibility and shared purpose. The development of a national structure and the cultivation of a culture that values honor resonate with aspects of our experience. Though our histories differ, both countries share a spirit that upholds individual dignity and responsibility to the community.
russia’s full-scale invasion has given this day an even deeper significance. In the face of crisis, our soldiers, medical workers, rescue teams, diplomats, and citizens continue to uphold our country with unwavering resolve. Freedom is not merely an ideal—it is expressed through daily actions: protecting towns, helping one another, supporting communities. Each of these acts is an expression of freedom.
Even Ukrainians taken prisoner by russian forces continue to encourage one another and preserve their dignity despite harsh conditions. Their strength of spirit has become a symbol for our entire nation and a source of profound inspiration for many.
Today, Ukraine moves forward guided by freedom and solidarity. Homes and communities across the country are growing as places where respect, responsibility, and gratitude take root.
Dignity and Freedom Day reminds us that the strength of our nation lies in the resolve carried in the hearts of our people.
