Ukraine symbols. Map.

We continue our series of publications about the symbols of Ukraine.
Each symbol is a key to understanding a nation’s culture, history, and self-identity.

Through symbols, one can see Ukraine as a unified whole and sense its space and its boundaries.
The map is one of these symbols.
In Ukraine, the shape of the country is often compared to a bird in flight.
In Japan, the outline of the nation — a chain of islands stretching along the ocean — resembles a dragon or a sickle.
Both images are easy to recognize and remember, which is why children learn to find them on a map from an early age.
This helps shape their understanding of the country’s geography and their sense of belonging to it.
A map teaches that a country is not an abstraction but a real land that must be known and protected.
The silhouette of a country is recognizable even without a label.
It appears on embroidered shirts, in textbooks, and in works of art.
It is the image of a territory acknowledged by the world and united by a shared history.
Ukraine’s modern state borders were established in 1991, following the declaration of independence.
They are enshrined in international law and recognized globally.
Within these borders, the country’s culture, economy, and society continue to grow.
The map in its present boundaries is the official image of the nation and a symbol of its sovereignty.
The map of Ukraine is an image where land, borders, and community come together.
It allows us to see the state as a whole — and to understand ourselves as part of it.
